A quick sweep of an eye shadow brush here, a spot of highlighter there… just a few simple beauty tricks can take your look into autumn, fast. And, where better to find inspiration than from the AW17 catwalks themselves?
From ultra-dewy skin to perfectly imperfect just-bitten lips, channel the season’s must-have make-up trends and feel instantly ready to step into the new season.
Supernatural skin
Winter may be coming, but that doesn’t mean your skin has to feel dull. Supernatural, flawless skin was all over the AW17 runways, from Burberry to Lanvin, where models’ skin had a natural lit-from-within glow.
To recreate the look, feed skin with moisturiser and keep foundation dewy; serums work really well. Then, add strokes of highlighter to the points on your face you would expect light to hit; cheekbones, cupid’s bow, bridge of the nose and temples. Keep lips bare and eyes natural; the emphasis is on the skin here.
Metallic eyes
A go-to trend for evening, the metallic eye brings autumn’s rusty colour palette into your make-up bag. As seen at J. JS Lee, the key is to create a glistening halo around the eye and pare back the rest of the look.
Using a rose gold eye shadow and fluffy brush, sweep eye shadow across the lids, into creases and under eyes. Give eyes maximum impact with lashings of jet black mascara, then complete with a flush of pink across cheeks and lips.
Pastel pop
Pastels aren’t just for spring/summer. At Mary Katrantzou, bold pops of sky blue were applied in statement geometric shapes, instantly highlighting eyes and giving make-up a directional twist.
Ultra-girly yet wearable, bring the look to life with a pop of pastel to the inner and outer corners of the eye; opt for shades of sky blue or baby pink and keep the look graphic with clean lines. To prevent the trend moving into 80s disco territory, go minimal with the rest of your make-up.
High hair
Accessories were key at the ready-to-wear shows. From chunky black velvet bows at Rochas and Tory Burch to ornate pearl-embellished headbands at Chanel, the spotlight on autumn’s hair trend didn’t just fall on the hair itself; it was often the embellishments that stole the show.
A shortcut to elevating your AW17 looks, sweep back hair off the face and secure with a chunky black headband for a perfectly polished yet edgy look that’s far from school girlish. Take it up a level à la Chanel and complete with graphic winged eyes and Twiggy-esque lashes for a 60s twist.
Just-bitten lips
Good news! No longer requiring an immaculate line and steady hand, it was the naturally imperfect lips that stole the show at Giambattista Valli, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and many more. Lips in rich berry shades were gently smudged for a softer effect.
To recreate this subtle, worn-in look, layer up lipstick in dark berry shades and gently smudge, then apply gloss within the lip line. You’ll look like the very best ‘morning after’ version of you.
